Haj Abdelmoughit, whose real name is Abdelmoughit Saaydi, was born in the old Medina of Casablanca. He is a star of the Moroccan Shaabi (popular) song and an expert in Ayta Mersaouiya (a genre of popular Arab song). Having first worked as a bank clerk, he left his banking job in 1978 and opted for what proved to be a successful musical career. Since then, Moughit has given many concerts and animated a great many evenings and grand marriage parties, both in Morocco and abroad. Besides song, Abdelmoughit is also gifted in the art of Taneghaft (bride-dressing, make-up, and care), a job that is ordinarily reserved for women. But for Abdelmoughit, it is a passionate pursuit which he has exercised ably since the 1980’s.
