For its 16th edition, the festival’s opening night of the National Theater Mohammed V will showcase the legendary Charles Aznavour, on Friday May 12th.
Rabat on Wednesday, February 22, 2017. He is undoubtedly the greatest living French-speaking songwriter and one of the greatest voices of modern popular music.
By welcoming Charles Aznavour on the opening night of Mohammed V National Theater on Friday May 12th, Mawazine not only confirms its international outlook and vision, but also demonstrates yet again its continued commitment to bring to the Moroccan public leading names in world music.
Coined by CNN as the “Entertainer of the Century” in 1988 with a career spanning 70 years, Charles Aznavour boasts over 100 million records sold, 1,200 songs, 80 feature films, 294 albums, hundreds of gold, platinum and diamond records, and thousands of concerts in 94 countries around the world.
Under his real name Chahnour Varinag Aznavourian, Charles Aznavour has played and recorded in seven languages and saw his songs covered by many artists such as Elton John, Bob Dylan, Sting, Placido Domingo, Céline Dion, Julio Iglesias, Edith Piaf, Liza Minnelli, Sammy Davis Jr., Ray Charles, Elvis Costello and many others.
Charles Aznavour has gained wide popularity around the world with his song SHE, number 1 in many countries and present in the Coup de Foudre blockbuster in Notting Hill. He also had other great hits with The Old Fashioned Way, Yesterday When I Was Young, La Mamma, La Bohème or What makes a man, etc.
Aznavour celebrated his 92nd birthday on May 22nd, 2016.
